Huckstep Published by Churchill Livingstone The following text and illustrations are extracted from a book written by Professor R.L.Huckstep, and first published in 1975. Tens of thousands of copies of various reprints of this book have been distributed to economically poor countries in the tropics and subtropics. There are 2 French editions and both books is still up to date. Both editions are at present out of print. Although the copyright is now held by the author Professor R.L.Huckstep, text and illustrations may be copied or reproduced in any form, without charge, provided that acknowledgement is made as to their source. Initially an introduction and operative procedures to correct lower limb contractures suitable for developing countries will be described plus details of manufacture of cheap, easily produced calipers, wheelchairs and other appliances made from locally available materials. Extracts from the French 2nd edition of Poliomyelitis, as well as further extracts from the English edition, will shortly be provided on this website. In addition details about the management of other orthopaedic conditions, as well as late untreated trauma common to developing countries will be included. Orthopaedic surgeons in developing countries, as well as those working in more sophisticated centres in Europe, North America, South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, are asked to access the website for details of World Orthopaedic Concern. They are also asked to join their regional branch of WOC, and to contribute to the training of medical students, doctors and paramedical personnel in economically poor countries either by advice or by short visits. There are still over 40 million physically disabled patients in the tropics and subtropics requiring treatment. |
